Opening the Gates
"Opening the Gates" is the perfect theme for 2017 for the Feast of Lanterns and Pacific Grove! Torii gates are rich is symbolism, representing a gateway between this world and the spiritual world. The Manadarin orders the Torii Gates to be lit in the search for his beloved daughter, Queen Topaz and the Scholar Chang. For the Feast of Lanterns, the gates also represent the celebration of the many cultures that enrich Pacific Grove and the multiple generations who return to join the Feast family, year after year, like Monarch butterflies. Open your heart as we open the gates... we welcome you!
The Board of Directors is excited to announce that applications are available for the Royal Court and the Royal Guard!
The Royal Court, as we know it today, was the inspiration of Elmarie Hurlbert Hyler Dyke in the late 1950's. Each young woman, whether she is a Princess or the Queen, represents a jewel based on the European birthstones for the 12 months of the year and she wears a brocade costume in the appropriate color. For example, Princess Sapphire wears a dark blue brocade. She is an ambassador for Pacific Grove, representing her community, embodying social grace, working on interview skills and practicing public speaking.
In 2016, the Board of Directors voted to make the Scholar Chang an official addition to the Royal Court. Adding Chang created a sensation and interest in opportunities for the young men of Pacific Grove to serve has led to another long awaited change. The Board of Directors have embraced our 2017 theme "Opening the Gates" and have added a Royal Guard.
The Royal Guard will showcase the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, with each young man donning a black silk jacket with an embroidered medallion of the animal he represents. These young men will serve their community by attending all of the same events along with the Royal Court. They will learn martial arts choregraphy and speak about the elements in conjunction with their zodiac animal. For example, this lunar New Year is the year of the Fire Rooster, so one young man of the Royal Guard will represent the Rooster and its element, fire.
Be a part of the living history of Pacific Grove! Be a role model! Earn a scholarship! Apply for the Royal Court or the Royal Guard and help us open the gates to your next adventure.
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) Information Meeting
The Information Meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 7th, 2017 at 6:30 pm.
This meeting is mandatory for at least one parent or guardian of any applicant for the 2017 Feast of Lanterns Royal Court and the Royal Guard. The meeting will outline the commitments and responsibilities required of a Royal Court and Guard member, including the preliminary calendar (subject to change as events are added). Please bring any questions you may have to this meeting as there will be a question and answer session following. The applications to serve of the Royal Court and Royal Guard are due by 5:00 pm on February 24, 2017. They will be posted on the Feast of Lanterns website on January 15, 2017.
This year the Board of Directors has voted to add the Royal Guard. Last year Chang was added as a member of the Royal Court and any young man trying out for it will go through the same interview process as the young ladies do. This year Chang will become the head of the Royal Guard and there will be 4 additional positions on the Royal Guard for young men to try out and be part of the Feast of Lanterns. This means that there will be a Royal Court with Queen Topaz with 6 Princess of various gemstones, a Royal Guard that is led by Chang, has 4 Guardsmen who represent animals and elements. The Royal Guard will learn a martial arts demonstration and they are already part of the pageant script. It is a perfect way to give young men a larger role in this hometown tradition. They are the knights and the court is the royalty.
